From 1956 to 1976, the borough of Saint-Léonard went from being a small farming community with fewer than 1,000 residents to a municipality with more than 78,000. This transformation was the result of a major housing boom. Many families in Saint-Léonard are of Italian descent: their influence can be seen in the characteristic duplexes and triplexes with white stone façades.
In recent years construction has focused on highrises, notable for their architectural design. Other ethnic communities also contribute to the borough’s community life. Popular meeting places include pastry shops and cafés on Jean-Talon Street. The high-quality recreational facilities maintained by the local authority are a favourite with families.
